Software Engineer

So when did you arrive in Iceland and why?
Nils
We moved here in April 2015 because my wife got a job at Reykjavik University.
Hayfa
I arrived here in May 2014, I had just been offered an internship and I was interested in the place because of its music scene. I thought it would be an interesting place to live.
Daniele
My fiancee is Icelandic and we decided to move to Iceland together in September 2014.
Why did you choose Tern Systems?
Nils
Because Tern is an interesting company and the level education among employees is high.
Hayfa
When I was looking for a job and I heard about this company that was doing work in such a interesting field I was very intrigued and pleasantly surprised that this opportunity existed in Iceland.
Daniele
Because I was studying aeronautics, so I thought that at Tern I could apply what I learned practically.
What are the differences in working in Iceland compared to other countries?
Nils
Being from Sweden the difference between countries is not so much. The main difference for me is that in Sweden I worked for a big company (Ericsson). It is nice to work at a smaller place, very short distance to upper management.
Hayfa
For me the main difference is that the working environment here is better than at larger corporations, that's what I really like here, it's more relaxed and friendly.
Daniele
It's more relaxed here, less bureaucratic and with and less hierarchy at work. For example, in Italy if you or your children are sick you need a doctor's note. In Iceland that's not necessary so you have more time to focus on what matters.

The Arctic Tern has by far the longest migrations known in the animal kingdom. It is not unusual for these birds to fly 90,000 km (56,000 mi) in a single year. At Tern Systems, we aspire in our efforts to reach as far afield as the Tern we take our name from.

In joining Tern Systems you would be developing state-of-the-art flight navigation systems that support the safe travel of millions of passengers annually. We are a small but close group of developers who are owned and supported by a national air services provider. In our third decade of operation we are confident that our best work is yet to come.

"YOU CANNOT PACK A GOOD NIGHT'S SLEEP"

Olafur

Solution Architect

Olafur Valsson (Lalli) is a Solution Architect at Tern Systems and has been with the company since 2003. Over the years he has travelled abroad regularly, to meet customers and install our systems. We asked him a few questions about his travels.

Which countries have you visited for Tern?
Lalli
Indonesia, S-Korea, China, United Arab Emirates, Spain, Holland, Australia, Thailand and UK.
Which country was the most memorable and why?
Lalli
Indonesia, because of how different it is to Iceland.
How is it working with other cultures?
Lalli
In Indonesia you get the feeling that there is a lot of stress, a lot of pressure and a lot to do before you get there, but once you are there it is actually quite relaxed including about time. I learned that tomorrow in Indonesia does not necessarily mean tomorrow, but rather sometime in the near future.
What has been the most surprising factor in your travels?
Lalli
The sheer number of people, especially in Jakarta, Indonesia. A trip that can normally take 20 minutes can take up to 3 hours in rush hour.
Have you tasted some local delicacies?
Lalli
In China silk worms are common and you can buy live scorpions on a spear, which are then deep fried, but I never tried either of them. If you buy a whole chicken in Indonesia it comes with the head and everything. I did try that!
Have you taken anything interesting home with you?
Lalli
I rarely buy many things but I have received many gifts. One of the most interesting ones was a head scarf worn in Bali.
What do you miss from home when travelling?
Lalli
A good night's sleep. It can be tough changing your clock when travelling far for only a few days.

Tern Systems is owned by Isavia, the national air navigation services provider of Iceland. Isavia employs over 1600 staff and is responsible for a large area of airspace in the North Atlantic.

Software solutions experts at Tern Systems work closely with air traffic controllers at Isavia to develop new systems. This is a key advantage of the relationship between Tern and Isavia and it helps us reach our goal of building ever-improving solutions in the years ahead.
